How to apply for American Express Nectar: complete step-by-step guide

This page explains how to apply for the American Express Nectar Credit Card in the UK, what information you should have ready and what to review before accepting the card.

The application is subject to eligibility and a credit assessment, so meeting the published requirements does not guarantee approval.

Step 1: Check the eligibility requirements

To apply for the American Express Nectar Credit Card, you must currently be 18 or over and have a permanent home address in the UK.

The official Nectar product page also states that applicants must earn at least £20,000 per year.

American Express’s general eligibility criteria for personal cards also include having a current UK bank or building society account and no history of bad debt.

Approval remains subject to status and American Express’s assessment of your circumstances.

To collect points through the card, you must also be a member of the Nectar loyalty programme.

Step 2: Have your information ready

American Express states that its credit card application asks for personal information such as your name, email address, date of birth and nationality.

You will also need to provide your phone number and current home address.

If you have lived at your current address for less than three years, you will be asked for your previous address.

Financial information can include your annual personal income, other household income, employment status and employer contact details.

American Express may also ask how long you have held your current UK bank or building society account.

The provider does not state that every applicant must automatically upload a passport, driving licence, utility bill or payslips.

Additional identity or supporting documentation may be requested when necessary.

Step 3: Start your application

Applications can be started through the official American Express Nectar Credit Card page.

American Express says an online credit card application can take less than 10 minutes when you have the necessary information available.

Complete the requested personal, contact and financial information carefully and review the important product information before submitting the application.

The application process may provide a decision quickly, although some cases can require further checks.

American Express also offers an Eligibility Checker if you want to see your likelihood of approval before making a formal application.

The Eligibility Checker uses a soft search and does not affect your credit rating.

Step 4: Understand the credit assessment

American Express assesses applications using information about your ability to repay, financial responsibility, credit history and the risk of the debt not being repaid.

Using the Eligibility Checker does not guarantee that a later application will be approved.

American Express also states that its current application process for eligible personal cards, including the Nectar Credit Card, can provide a decision without affecting your credit score.

If approved, you can decide whether to accept the card. If you accept it, your credit file will be updated to show that the application was successful.

Step 5: What happens after approval

If your application is approved and you accept the card, American Express states that the physical card should arrive by post within 10 business days.

The PIN is sent separately and may arrive a few days before the card.

You will also receive information about managing your account and accessing the card’s benefits.

Once the card arrives, it must be activated before normal use.

American Express allows activation through its digital services, including the Amex App or its activation page.

Step 6: Review the costs and credit limit

The American Express Nectar Credit Card currently has no annual card fee in the first membership year.

From the second year, a £30 annual fee is charged.

The card currently has a 35.8% representative APR variable and a purchase rate equivalent to 29.1% p.a. variable.

The representative APR calculation uses an assumed credit limit of £1,200.

This does not mean that £1,200 will be your actual limit.

The current Summary Box states that the minimum credit limit is £700. The maximum depends on application information, credit bureau checks and your financial circumstances.

Step 7: Check additional charges

The current Summary Box states a 2.99% non-sterling transaction fee after a foreign transaction has been converted into pounds sterling.

Cash advances currently have a 3% fee, with a £3 minimum.

Cash advances also have a higher applicable interest rate than standard purchases.

Late payments and returned payments currently carry a £12 fee, subject to the conditions in the card agreement.

Review the latest Summary Box before using the card for cash withdrawals, foreign spending or other transactions that may involve additional charges.

Step 8: Understand the Nectar rewards

To earn Nectar points through the card, you must be a member of the Nectar loyalty programme.

The card currently earns 2 Nectar points for every full £1 spent on most eligible purchases.

Different earning rules apply to some transactions. For example, purchases at UK warehouse retailers currently earn 1 point per full £1.

At participating Nectar partners, using both the credit card and your Nectar account can provide additional points under the applicable partner rules.

New eligible Cardmembers can currently receive 20,000 Nectar points after spending £2,000 within the first three months.

The welcome offer is only available under the current eligibility conditions and can change or be withdrawn.

Before you apply

Consider the annual fee from the second year, the APR and how you normally repay credit card spending.

Rewards can lose value if you regularly carry an interest-bearing balance or incur additional fees.

Also check whether you qualify for the current welcome offer rather than assuming it applies to every new application.

American Express currently states that the welcome offer is not available if you have held a personal American Express Card within the previous 24 months.

Always review the latest terms before submitting an application because rates, offers and eligibility criteria can change.
